Acne can affect us all at any point in our lives, although the severity of the acne can vary widely from person to person and on different areas of the body, with 80% of teenagers being affected. Genetics is thought to be the cause in 80% of cases. The most commonly treated areas are the face, neck and back. Whilst acne is associated with puberty, many suffer with this condition into adulthood. At the DrBK clinic, we offer a number of treatments to improve the appearance of the skin and manage the condition going forward with a view to eradicate acne altogether and to minimise scarring.
What are the Causes of Acne?
Acne develops when the pores of the skin become blocked. This can be as a result of a build-up of excess oils, bacteria or dead skin cells and primarily effect people with a greater number of oil glands. Hormonal changes are the most common trigger of acne, either in puberty or through pregnancy. A diet that is high in fat or sugars can also contribute, and this is possibly due to a combination of increased blood sugar and insulin release. Certain medications, such as the contraceptive pill and corticosteroids, can also trigger acne.
There are a number of possible treatments available from Gel Skin Peels to Skinrolla/Skin Needling therapy. Depending on your specific circumstances, our Skin & Laser Therapist will discuss the options available to you and a bespoke treatment package will be created for the treatment and management of your acne. This may involve one or a combination of the following treatments.
Skin peels can reduce the symptoms of acne by working deep within the skin, stimulating new cell growth and the production of collagen and elastin, encouraging cell renewal. Dead skin cells are removed and clean, fresh, new skin takes its place, improving the tone and texture of skin over time. We offer a range of skin peels with different strengths that you would be able to move onto as your treatment programme progresses.
Skinrolla or skin needling is available for those whose acne is not active but has left scarring and enlarged, open pores. This treatment stimulates increased levels of elastin, collagen and promotes overall skin rejuvenation, leaving you with smoother, clearer and more even skin.
