How does Azzalure injections work?

Azzalure injections contain the active ingredient botulinum toxin type A, which is a toxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. Botulinum toxin type A is a bacterial toxin that prevents nerves from functioning normally (a neurotoxin). It prevents nerves from releasing a chemical called acetylcholine, which is essential for the nerves to communicate with muscle cells. This toxin therefore prevents muscles from receiving nerve stimulation. Preventing nerve stimulation of muscles causes the muscles to become paralysed. Botulinum toxin type A causes muscle paralysis until such time as the nerve develops new endings to communicate with the muscles.

Azzalure injections normally takes an average of 2 to 3 days to start working, although it may take a little longer for the full effects to be seen. Azzalure injections are administered into the muscle above and between the eyebrows to temporarily paralyse and relax these muscles. They are used to cosmetically improve the appearance of vertical frown lines between the eyebrows. These injections only provide a short-term improvement.

They are only used when the appearance of frown lines is prominent and is having an important psychological effect on an individual. An improvement in the appearance of the frown lines between the eyebrows is generally seen after two or three days. The effect of these injections lasts for up to four months. For a continued effect you would need to keep having the injections every three to four months.

What can be treated with Azzalure?

Azzalure is used to treat cosmetic conditions that typically result with age. The glabellar muscles in the forehead often produce “frown lines” or folds above the eyebrows and directly above the bridge of the nose. Azzalure injections will reduce or remove these wrinkles or lines temporarily. The results have been typically observed to last between three and six months.

What is the difference between Botox and Azzalure?

The answer is there is no difference between these products. Botox has become a worldwide household name, but what many people do not realise is that Botox is a Brand name for the product Butulinum Toxin.

Azzalure is another brand of botulinum which reduces the appearance of vertical frown lines by weakening the muscles just like Botox.

Azzalure is not a new product, it has been around in the UK since the 1990's but it's brand has only been recognised widely since 2009.

What is the procedure?

On the Day - Before injecting Azzalure any make-up will be removed and the skin disinfected. Your practitioner will then study your facial muscles to see how they work, as individuals can differ. The injections should be painless, but a local anaesthetic cream can be used prior to treatment. To treat frown lines, Azzalure is injected with a fine needle above and in between your eyebrows. The treatment session will last around 15 minutes and you can return to your usual daily activities immediately afterwards.
